PEOPLE WHO WANT BABIES NEED ABORTIONS TOO
WRITTEN AND Performed by Lena Gilbert & directed by Joanna Parson, THE APPOINTMENT is aN EMOTIONALLY gripping 50-minute solo performance of RAW storytelling ABOUT PREGNANCY LOSS & HOW THE AMERICAN HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IS FAILING WOMEN.
inside the appointment
We meet Lena just after she has learned that the baby she has been eagerly anticipating for 17 weeks no longer has a heartbeat. Lena details the process she goes through as she tries to find health care. Because she has been with a midwife, she cannot find an ob/gyn to give her the life saving procedure she needs. Eventually, the only place she can receive care is at an abortion clinic. In telling her story, Lena paints the picture of a maternal health care system rife with judgment of the very women they serve, and leaves the audience asking what they can do to create change.

The US maternal health care system is rife with judgment of the very women they serve. What if you’re deemed unacceptable? What if you’re a pregnant woman who can’t even get a doctor’s appointment?
We want to share this story as widely as possible, including in non-traditional theater spaces and virtual events.

"In America, we make policies based on judging women and deciding merit of care.
It's the wrong basis to use."
